The Damsel
Overview
Work on Erin Lunsford’s 2020 album The Damsel began with the title itself, which became the foundation for the visual direction. Inspired by the idea of contrast between softness and strength, I developed a bright, expressive color palette of blues, yellows, and pinks that carried through every part of the release. This led to a full editorial-style photoshoot that established the core imagery used across single artwork, promotional materials, and album collateral.
The original plan for touring the album shifted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so we reimagined the rollout as a collaborative visual project rooted in community. I worked with Erin to invite Richmond-based artists to each select a song from the album and create a piece in their own style in response. These works were released over several weeks, alongside print editions sold to support the artists directly, with proceeds going back to them. The project became both a visual interpretation of the album and a way to connect artists during a period when live performance was not possible.
